Saskatchewan’s incumbent telephone carrier, SaskTel, has activated its own 3G mobile broadband network, similar to those of nationwide wireless giants, Rogers, Bell, and Telus.

SaskTel’s new network uses HSPA+ cellular technology, which allows smartphones to perform various data functions at comparable speeds to a fixed-line broadband connection.

“We’re now on an evolutionary path that allows us to compete with any other company in the world,” said SaskTel CEO, Ron Styles. “The most important thing about this new network is where it leads us to in the future.”

Next year, SaskTel hopes to extend its 3G network to cover 98% of Saskatchewan’s population. In the years following, it plans to make the transition to even more advanced 4G, or ‘Long Term Evolution’ technology.
