Canadian wireless operator, Telus Mobility, has announced plans to discourage customers from receiving paper bills in an effort to cut costs and safeguard the environment.

Beginning September 21, the company will charge customers $2 for each paper bill they receive.

“Paper bills are more expensive. You’ve got to produce them, print them, and mail them. The two-dollar charge represents the cost to us to produce a paper bill,” explained Telus spokesman, Shawn Hall, in an interview.

For each customer that opts to receive wireless bills by email, Telus will donate $2 to the Nature Conservancy of Canada. Users who sign up for the e-billing option will also be entered into a weekly draw to win $1,000 and have an additional $1,000 donated to the Nature Conservancy in their name.

Telus cannot extend the program to landline telephones at this time, due to strict CRTC regulations which govern basic telephone service.

    1. What a total rip off!!! It should be illegal to charge a customer to send them a bill.

    3. What ever happened to service. Their fee structure has taken all of that into account.
Using the environment is a cover your A.. comment.

They should offer alternatives like via a free call to voicemail or text for your balance and payment options.
Paper has to be an option that I select as I can not always know my Internet service is workimg (by guess who – Telus).

The problem here is as usual they force us to somehow know when this next bill is due and that we all have email.
Fine for big companies who supply computers to their staff and support them.

I’m glad the CRTC prevents them from flogging this on the Landline users. Watch for the reaction there and Sahw will just love to advertize their phone service with paper bills.

    4. I don’t know why anyoone who has access to the Internet and email will want a paper bill. Online billing is more convenient. Also, if you ever need to look up an old invoice, you can easily do so without worrying that you’ve thrown it out. The one thing I’m not so sure about is what about people who don’t have Internet? All of a sudden, they have to pay for a bill? Also, does this apply to existing customers as well as new ones or just new customers?

    7. I got my bill notifying me of the charge. I called telus and complained asking them to point out in my contract and terms of agreement where I agreed to the extra charge. After 1/2 hour on hold the said they would credit my account 26 bucks for the remainder of my contract to cover the charge.

Call and bitch and tell them they have violated the terms of the contract and refuse to pay. They will fold.
