Google’s Android operating system is continuing to gain market share, with Android-based smartphones now accounting for 25% of U.S. mobile internet traffic, according to the market research firm, Quantcast.

Apple remains the dominant player with its iPhone OS accounting for some 56% of U.S. web traffic. That number is down from 68% in September 2009, however, while Android’s share has more than tripled from just 8% during the same time period.

Research In Motion’s share has remained relatively flat at 9%, as BlackBerry devices continue to dominate the enterprise smartphone market but fail to catch on as well with the broader population of consumers.
