Research In Motion has acquired the bulk of the assets of DataViz, maker of Documents To Go and other business productivity applications for mobile devices.

“RIM has acquired some of the assets of DataViz and hired the majority of its employees to focus on supporting the BlackBerry platform,” the smartphone manufacturer confirmed yesterday.

It remains to be seen whether RIM will preserve the cross-platform nature of DataViz’s software and continue to sell applications for iPhone, Windows Mobile, and Android-based devices. Restricting the popular applications to its own BlackBerry platform would establish a new competitive advantage for RIM’s core business. On the other hand, RIM reportedly paid $50 million for the DataViz assets, and as CNET’s Jessica Dolcourt points out, “fifteen dollars a pop for … Documents To Go for iPhone isn’t a business to quickly pull from.”
