Rogers to Introduce Shared Mobile Data Plans for Smartphones, Tablets
4:53 pm on December 4, 2010 | Category: Cell Phones, Mobile Devices, Multimedia, Telecom Services, Wireless
Rogers will seek to make 3G-enabled ‘tablet’ devices more appealing to smartphone owners, by allowing users to share a single data plan between tablets and phones.
Rogers plans to begin selling Research In Motion’s much-anticipated PlayBook device, a 7-inch touchscreen tablet, among other tablets, in the first quarter of 2011. Although the first incarnation of the PlayBook will come with Wi-Fi only (i.e. no 3G chip), future versions are expected to have mobile broadband connectivity built in.
“We’ll start with the Wi-Fi and add the 3G when it’s available,” commented Rogers’ Chief Marketing Officer, John Boynton, adding that when that day comes, customers will be able to connect to the internet on smartphones and tablet devices, using a single data plan for both.

Rogers lied about this for iPad/iPhone users and no doubt they are lying about this now. Why even listen to them make a comment???

Users will find that 5 or 6gb data plans do not cut it for today’s common uses including streaming shows & multimedia content, tethering for downloading apps, updates, archives etc.
Perhaps a shared plan at around 15 to 20 gb should be the norm. …expect that from Rogers though with a reasonable cost?

Good move Rogers, this will allow users of the first gen to be able to take their device with them where ever they go and still be able to connect to the internet.

That is excellent news for myself and my winners… As for myself I normally have to pay for 3 or 4 different internet providers.. It would be nice to pay just one provider for a change..

What the hell is the point in releasing it only on Wifi? That’s got to be one of the worst business moves ever.

Too bad they haven’t introduce a full package rate plan for under $30/month.

Rogers already allows you to pool — for an extra $20/mo. Moking it more attractive to just keep your data plans separate. 5gb for $30, plus $20 to share for $50 total, or you pay two $30 plans and get 10gb…
