DSL: The Technology of Choice for New Broadband Users
As high-speed internet infrastructure is deployed around the world, and demand for dialup access gradually dries up, DSL providers are reaping the lion’s share of revenue from the global broadband transition.
Even in the United States, where broadband access has been widely available for nearly a decade and cable companies have come to dominate the high-speed internet market, DSL has made significant gains over the past couple of years. A major decline in DSL pricing has prompted even cost-conscious stragglers in low and middle income brackets to swap their dialup subscriptions for the competitively-priced high speed data services offered by telecom carriers.
Cable companies, which still hold a slight lead in U.S. market share, are continuing to see some success in the broadband sector, but have fallen behind their telecom rivals in terms of new subscriber acquisitions.
On a global scale, this trend is even more apparent, as the prevalence of telecom infrastructure allows DSL to gain subscribers far faster than any other form of wireline internet access, capturing a total market share of 66%.
